So, you decided to visit one of the most beautiful countries on earth—Iceland.

Wondering which places to visit?

7 days is the sweet spot—you can see so many incredible places without feeling rushed. And believe us, Iceland has postcard views everywhere you turn.

Before we get  started, check out our guide on arriving at the airport and renting a car in Iceland.

Here’s the trip we recommend for a week-long adventure:

Day 1: Snæfellsnes Peninsula – Majestic Landscapes and Iconic Sights

As soon as you land, we recommend driving straight to Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It’s often called “Iceland in Miniature” because it has a little bit of everything—volcanoes, glaciers, beaches, and stunning cliffs.

Borgarnes

Your first stop is Borgarnes, about a 1.5-hour drive from Keflavik Airport. This charming town is the perfect spot to stretch your legs, grab a coffee, and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains. While here, visit the Settlement Center to learn about Iceland’s Viking history and take a quick stroll along the waterfront.

Hofsstadaskogur Forest

This peaceful forest is a rare sight in Iceland, known for its wide-open landscapes. Hofsstadaskogur provides a serene escape with gentle walking paths surrounded by lush greenery. It’s the perfect spot to stretch your legs, breathe in the crisp air, and ease into your adventure. Don’t rush—enjoy the quiet, as you won’t find many forests like this in Iceland.

Ytri Tunga Beach

If you’re a wildlife lover, Ytri Tunga Beach is an absolute must. Famous for its seal colonies, this beach offers plenty of chances to spot these playful creatures lounging on the rocks. Don’t forget your camera—seals make for an unforgettable photo opportunity. There’s plenty of parking available, so it’s an easy stop to enjoy some of Iceland’s unique wildlife.

Bjarnarfoss Waterfall

A quick but stunning stop! Bjarnarfoss is a towering waterfall cascading down a rocky cliffside. It’s just a short walk from the parking area to get closer to the falls, where you can feel the refreshing mist. The surrounding area is equally picturesque, with mossy rocks and beautiful views of the countryside.

Búðakirkja & Búða Beach

Búðakirkja, the iconic black church, is a photographer’s dream. Its striking contrast against the rugged Icelandic landscape creates a scene you won’t want to miss. After admiring the church, take a relaxing stroll along Búða Beach, where you can enjoy the peaceful sound of waves and take in the beauty of the surroundings.

Arnarstapi & Gatklettur (Stone Arch)

Park in the charming village of Arnarstapi and prepare for one of the most scenic coastal walks in Iceland. The trail to Hellnar offers incredible views of the ocean and cliffs, with Gatklettur—a dramatic stone arch—stealing the show. Take your time to explore the fascinating rock formations and soak in the coastal beauty.

Lóndrangar & Malarrif Lighthouse

These towering basalt cliffs are a must-see on the peninsula. Rising dramatically from the ocean, Lóndrangar is a natural wonder with a mystical atmosphere. Nearby, the Malarrif Lighthouse offers a striking contrast against the rocky shoreline. This spot is perfect for quick photos or a peaceful moment enjoying the view.

Djúpalónssandur Beach

This black sand beach is a treasure trove of stories. Wander along the shore to see remnants of an old shipwreck and test your strength with the famous “lifting stones” once used by Icelandic fishermen to gauge their readiness for work. The dramatic scenery here is unforgettable, with smooth pebbles and crashing waves.

Saxhóll Crater

Get ready for a short but rewarding hike! The trail up Saxhóll Crater is well-maintained and takes only a few minutes to climb. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula—an excellent spot for panoramic photos.

Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall

Save the best for last! Kirkjufellsfoss is one of Iceland’s most photographed spots, with the iconic Kirkjufell mountain serving as the backdrop. Whether you visit during golden hour or sunset, the views here are magical. Easy parking and a short trail make this a must-see to wrap up your day.

Where to Stay on Day 1

We recommend Stöð Guesthouse and Apartments for the night. This cozy accommodation is perfectly located in the heart of Snæfellsnes, making it easy to explore the area’s natural wonders.

Where to Eat on Day 1

Top off your day with a delicious meal at Bjargarsteinn Mathús. This charming restaurant serves locally sourced Icelandic cuisine with stunning views of the mountains and sea. It’s the perfect way to end your first day.
